Moving Forward

While it has its charms, fashion doesn’t always like to inhabit the past too long when it comes to deriving inspiration, especially if the inspiration reminds one of the current woes that one can read, see or hear about regardless of where one looks.

So while the designers are cautious in pushing the fashion customer too far into change, there is the need to keep things somewhat fresh.  Whereas the unknown can be a scary place for many, the charm of speculating in the future is the fifty-fifty chance that it may be more optimistic. Given that the current international economic and political scenario isn’t exactly rosy, the future is starting to look fairly good. And we tend to gravitate there when looking at now or the past fails to satisfy us.

That being said, we still see some safety in holding onto trends more established in SS2012 such as draping, shine, peplums and colour from collections by DKNY, J. Mendel,  It is distracting to continue to see pre-fall roll out as we become more engrossed in the holidays but it does come forth and the collections are putting the woman towards a brave face with harder cuts (Diane Von Furstenburg, Giuletta, Helmut Lang, Vera Wang and VPL) angular geometry and striping(Doo.Ri, Helmut Lang, J. Mendel) and somber colours throughout. The expressions of modernity came in asymmetry, creative architecture in cut and rusching and in layering as well.

Which will we see more of will depend on what the customers gravitate to. Despite pre-fall becoming a more important and established collection season, it’s not as primary and is more the testing ground for designers who recognize that it is a business, and one that must go forward and onward to survive.
